Spotlight on Stylist Sylvie Mus
In my opinion, Sylvie Mus is one of the coolest women on the internet! I realize that’s a bold statement but look at her! She’s dope! This stunning Rwandan beauty resides in Helsinki, Finland and is captivating street style fanatics with her minimalist looks. The former model, who’s always been interested in fashion, is now taking on the world of styling. With various great collaborations under her belt, I’m quite excited to see what the future holds for Mus!
What sparked your interest in fashion?
I became interested in fashion at a very young age, it’s honestly the only field I’ve ever imagined working in. I started modeling at the age of 14 and my love for fashion just grew from there.
How did you decide you wanted to be a stylist?
For the longest time I wanted to work as a stylist. I think this started from when I was working as a model I always felt like the stylists had the best job. They got to dress the models in amazing clothes and bring the photographer's vision to life and I thought it was so cool. I’ve always loved dressing people up and when I learned that this is something I could do for a living I decided to go for it.
Who or what inspires your style?
The 90’s are my favorite era, so my style is always influenced by that in some way. I’m also very into men’s fashion so I wear a lot of men's clothes too.
Has your style evolved over time?
My style has evolved a lot over time all thought it’s always been quite minimalistic. I’ve simplified it more and I’m prioritizing comfort now more than before.
What are your wardrobe staples?
My wardrobe staples are: a basic white t shirt, a black oversize men’s suit, a leather trench coat, good vintage jeans and a pair of black pointy mules. And these are the type of things you can just throw on and they always look good.
What are your favorite upcoming trends?
I’m really into the padded headbands by Prada right now! I'm seeing more and more of them lately.
Are there any trends from the past you wish you didn't partake in?
I can’t think of any specific trend, but I think any outfit that doesn’t feel like “you” is always a bad choice.
What has been your favorite project to work on so far?
I styled a really good editorial in a Museum this month and so far it’s my favorite project that I’ve worked on. Everything just worked perfectly from the styling to the photography and the location. The outcome was so unreal!
What is your favorite and least favorite aspect of being a stylist?
My favorite aspect is of course that I get to express my creativity and tell a story with the clothes.
My least favorite aspect about working as a stylist in Finland is that most of the work that is offered is very commercial and there isn’t enough work for stylists / photographers who want to do something new and creative.
Any last words? (words of wisdom, fun/interesting news)
My words of wisdom are “Always trust your instincts and know that you don’t have to do everything. It’s ok to say no to an opportunity if it doesn’t feel right, no matter how big it seems.”
